Square's Real Cost at Every Sales Volume

Last updated

Square's Canadian pricing looks simple from the outside: no monthly fee, one flat rate, pay only when you take a payment. The current rate card is 2.5% for in-person credit transactions and 0.75% + 7¢ for INTERAC debit — verified 2026-10-05 on Square's Canadian pricing page. Simple per transaction. But "2.5%" tells you nothing about what Square costs you per month.

This guide turns those rates into monthly numbers at three realistic sales volumes — $5,000, $20,000 and $50,000 — with hardware amortized in. The math is worked from Square's published Canadian rates, with every assumption spelled out so you can redo it for your own mix.

Most US-authored pricing articles quote the wrong ladder: in the US, Square lowers your rate as you pay more per month. Canada has no such ladder — Free ($0), Plus ($35+/month per location) and Premium (custom) all use the same transaction rates. The paid tiers buy features for restaurants, retailers and appointment businesses, not cheaper processing.

ChannelCanadian rate
Credit card in person (tap, dip, swipe)2.5%
INTERAC debit in person (chip and PIN or tap)0.75% + 7¢
Online / invoice (card not present)2.8% + 30¢
Keyed in (manual entry, card on file, virtual terminal)3.3% + 15¢
Cards issued outside CanadaAdditional 1.5%

Two costs that still surprise owners: instant transfers cost 1.5% per transfer (minimum $25 CAD), and Afterpay is 6% + 30¢ per transaction.

$5,000/month: the starting point

At $5,000 a month with a $40 average ticket (125 transactions) and a 70/30 credit-to-debit split — an illustrative mix for a counter business — the math is: credit fees $87.50, debit fees about $13.88, for $101.38 in processing. A $69 card reader amortized over three years adds $1.92 a month. First-year monthly cost: about $103, an effective rate of 2.07%.

There are no monthly minimums and no contracts on the Free plan — exactly the detail to check on competing quotes, where a lower rate plus a monthly minimum can cost more in a slow month.

$20,000/month: the full counter

At $20,000 (500 transactions at $40): credit fees $350, debit fees $55.50, for $405.50 in processing. This is where hardware stops being a $69 reader. A Square Register — $999 at current Canadian pricing, verified 2026-10-05 on Square's Canadian hardware page — amortizes to about $27.75 a month over three years, for roughly $433 a month, an effective rate of 2.17%.

The Plus tier ($35+/month per location) does not change these numbers; it adds restaurant, retail or appointment features. Upgrade for the features, never for the rate. And the add-ons are where "no monthly fee" gets its asterisks: Email Marketing starts at $20/month, Loyalty at $60/month. Budget them separately.

$50,000/month: the custom-rate threshold

At $50,000 (1,250 transactions): credit fees $875, debit fees $138.75, for $1,013.75 in processing — over $12,000 a year before hardware. Annualized, that is $600,000, well past Square's $250,000-a-year threshold for custom-rate eligibility. Square does not publish that rate; it is negotiated.

Past about $20,000 a month, collect competing quotes before committing. Four processor migrations — into Moneris, TD to Moneris with a POS rollout, FreedomPay to Shift4, and one greenfield setup — keep teaching the same lesson: the headline rate is the smallest part of the decision. Contract length, termination fees and monthly minimums decide the real cost, and Square's no-contract structure is what makes it easy to leave if a better deal appears.

Which tier wins at each volume

Monthly volumeProcessing costTier verdict
$5,000~$103Free — no monthly fee, no reason to pay for features you may not use.
$20,000~$433Free for processing; Plus only if its features pay for themselves at $35+/month per location.
$50,000~$1,014Start on Free, then ask Square sales about a custom rate — and get two competing quotes.

Run the feature math separately from the fee math. In Canada, the tier question is never about the rate — it is about whether the software features are worth their subscription.

Work out your own number

  1. Pull your last three months of statements. Note total card sales and the credit-versus-debit split — INTERAC debit at 0.75% + 7¢ is the lever most owners underestimate.
  2. Apply Square's rates to your mix: 2.5% on in-person credit, 0.75% + 7¢ on debit, 2.8% + 30¢ on anything online, 3.3% + 15¢ on keyed-in.
  3. Add hardware divided by the months you will keep it — a $69 reader over 36 months is $1.92/month; a Register-class device is about $28/month.
  4. Add any add-ons you would actually turn on (Email Marketing from $20/month, Loyalty from $60/month).

What success looks like: your result lands within a few dollars of one month's Square dashboard fees report. If it is far off, your credit/debit split is wrong — that split drives everything.

FAQ

Does Square charge a monthly fee in Canada?
The core POS and processing have no monthly fee on the Free plan. Plus is $35+/month per location for advanced features, and add-ons like Email Marketing and Loyalty are billed separately.

Do all cards cost the same?
Yes — Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover share the same base rate in person. Cards issued outside Canada add 1.5%.

Can I negotiate Square's rates?
Above $250,000 a year in credit-card sales (excluding INTERAC debit), Square says you may be eligible for a custom rate. Below that, the published rate is the rate.

Can I pass the fee to customers with a surcharge?
Credit-card surcharging is permitted in eligible provinces up to a 2.4% cap, but Square offers no native automated dual pricing — merchants handle cash pricing with manual discount buttons.
